Biography: Alan’s passion for stocks began at the age of twelve. He began his career as a stockbroker, but soon learned that a career in sales was not his forte. He next worked for a small investment advisory firm helping design and value pension plans for small businesses. He left there to attend graduate school at Washington University, St. Louis, one of the top programs in the nation.
After graduate school, Alan worked for T. Rowe Price Group. There he interacted daily with portfolio managers, traders, custodians and clients. It was during this time he earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. After leaving T. Rowe Price, Alan served as Research Director for a value-oriented investment newsletter. He left the newsletter business to launch Aerie Capital.
In addition to investing, Alan also has a passion for track and field. A good high school runner, he went on to earn a spot on a Division I college cross country team. After college, he continued to run competitively and attempted to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon. His bid was unsuccessful due to injuries, though the experience was invaluable. In addition to competing, he has been involved in all aspects of track and field including coaching and officiating.
When not seeking out that next good investment idea or running, Alan is an active member of the Alumni Board of Guilford College. He and his wife Laura are active with AARF – the Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation of Winston-Salem – as well as Boston Terrier Rescue of NC, East Tennessee Boston Terrier Rescue and Pug Rescue of NC. In addition, they are active members of Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.
